OT: US TN-Visa(I-94)

A bit off topic here, but since there are many AC fliers to the US on a TN work visa, thought this might apply to this forum.

I've had a TN visa for a few years, my latest one doesn't expire till late 2012. I've have my I-94 card attached to my passport since I got the TN visa.

Today, as I was coming back from my mini-rtw vacation from FRA-ORD-YYZ, when I entered ORD, the officer took away my I-94 stating that I left north American so its no longer valid.

What does that mean? The next time I go to the US for work(next week), do I need to go through the entire TN visa application process with the employment letter, etc...? Or can I just fill out a new I-94 card?

thanks
