I would be very surprised if the OP would be allowed off the plane in San Juan. To make this even less likely than for a normal division, on flights from PR to the lower 48, they tend to do an agriculture check, xraying everything. Yes, I realize that PR is a USA territory and not a third country.
Since it's a diversion, I do not think the ticket could possibly be rewritten as UVF-SJU then connecting SJU-NYC.
