Once you get, or even threaten, to get a lawyer involved, all options will go away. They will simply respond "fine, see you in court".

What I don't understand, is if they cancelled them, they should give you the money back whether they were stolen or not. You might lose the fee, but the value of the cheques should be an easy thing to get back...
