Agreed.

Balthazar and Babbo (both recommended upthread) are two of my favorites. For something more low-key (in cost as well as atmosphere), here are a few suggestions:

Eolo (absolutely amazing focaccia and crostini) in Chelsea

Takashi (unique Korean-Japanese barbecue) in the West Village

Brasilina (new Brazilian restaurant with a caipirinha mulatta to die for) in Hell's Kitchen

These are places that I go to time and time again.
