Easier: (at least on PMCO) just cancel - the "ticket" will remain in your profile and you can do a, "flight change" within a year to whatever is at the same award level. If it's a different level; you can call and if more miles add; if less miles I have no clue what happens.
Or... leave it cancelled for the year and try for at least Platinum status - then redeposit.
