If you change to another flight (same cabin same carrier) there is no fee regardless of status. So even if you don't have definitive travel plans, the best thing to do is just book a random flight sometime out in the future and then change it again when you have travel plans when you can use the award.

Probably best for everyone if you don't abuse this benefit.
