This is what I do and have done so many times.

US has no problem accepting such a box of wine as baggage. You sign a release, but the box protects the wine very well.

Multiple times I've seen unprotected cases of wine come off the carousel with bottles broken and wine leaking all over the place. Personally, I would not take this risk. But then I wouldn't be transporting a case of wine that wasn't worth protecting, so to a large degree it comes down to your appetite for the risk of losing it.
