My mom has been 1k for 20+ years and told me that in years past they have waived about ~25 miles when she has been short that. Do any of you know anything about this? If you don't think I should rely on the mercy of United and Continental, what do you suggest I do? I suppose I could trade in 10,000 miles for 1,000 but it seems excessive.

The FT mantra with regard to making status thresholds is essentially, "the only way to be 100% sure is to rack up the miles". However being that close, you may receive some
one time exception style mercy. Whatever you do, be proactive...at the very least call and document names, times, etc if they tell you you are good. @:-)
