Methoughts it was a rhetorical question. If it really is 'common or garden' food poisoning, should be over fairly quickly. Tell him to avoid dairy products for a while, since one can become temporarily lactose intolerant following some forms food poisoning which can actually prolong symptoms far longer than the initial infection.

Having lost all my grandparents some time ago, and through various reasons not being able to see them since I was a small child: I would go...and I know you were being facetious on that bit.
