Yes, domestic upgrades on premium routes such as EWR/IAD/ORD will be real tough for a 1K in SFO, unless you are on Y/B fares.
From 2012 year, any elite on a Y/B fare will overtake a 1K on a cheap fare.
Do not choose SQ's program. Its one of the worst in the alliance.
Suggest you go to LH Miles and More. You will get 200% EQM's for your business class tickets. 100K miles is Star Gold (LH Senator).
LH MM program members can redeem awards on the prohibited SQ aircrafts. LH MM SEN/HON members can request LH A380 First Class awards. These are some nice perks.
You might luck out with some op-ups if you fly LH for your TATL segments (C to F).
