The calendar approach at CO.com is useful.

What I've noticed with CO is that they have "married pair" redemptions only for OnePass members: BOS-IAH-LAX will show up as available, but individually BOS-IAH and IAH-LAX will not. *A will not be able to book the trip if the individual sectors are not available. However, if you are able to find a seat on a non-stop flight at CO.com, then IME you will be able to book it via *A.

Also, ANA and Aeroplan include more airlines than CO.com, and CO.com includes some partner airlines (like Copa) that you can't currently book via *A. That said, that calendar search is very useful!
