If you get yourself to NYC area you can usually get a relatively cheap'er flight to Kiev on AeroSvit Ukrainian Airlines. Once in Kiev, train travel is super cheap around the whole of Ukraine and reasonable into Poland as well.

I really wanted to go to Ukraine in 2012 for the soccer games and bring my Frenchy cousins there... but am stuck in New Zealand now
