Agree with that, it's very discouraging to try to tour yourself around in a rental aircraft in most countries. I think Australia is one of the better ones in terms of getting a short-term temporary authorisation.
I used to fly for a living (or what passed as one anyway) in Canada, so I have a Canadian CPL with ME/IFR and two-crew endorsement as well as a full US Commercial certificate and an Australian Special Pilot Licence (essentially a converted PPL). I got the Australian licence just for fun so that I can rent planes when I'm down there seeing as I live closer to Oz than Canada now. I used to own a share in a C177RG based at CYBW (Calgary Springbank),
loved every minute of flying it but had to get rid of it when I moved. I don't have the spare time to burn holes in the sky anymore and I've been spending all my spare money on taking commercial flights for leisure. One day I think the bug will bite me again and I may be in the right financial situation to buy my dream plane of a Mooney or a V-tail Bonanza.
