There's not a lot to explain.
If you're Global Services, 120 hours before the flight, the system sweeps. If there's an available seat, you get it. 1K is 100 hours. Premier Executive, 72 hours. Premier, 48 hours.
UA staff don't deadhead in First - they save those seats for their elites. I'm sure someone will bring up a "Oh yeah, I saw a UA staffer in first" story, but for the most part, that's all there is to it.
They've tweaked it for 2012 because they've incorporated that 75k Platinum level now. A quick search through the United Forum will bring up all sorts of discussion about it.
