Note a big difference with American airports : you do not have to pick up your bags at your port of entry in Schengen, then check in again. Bags are checked through, I mean the customs control is made at final destination.
For instance, if you travel LAX-MAD via CDG :
- your luggage flyes direct (if not lost) to MAD, were it is checked by Spanish customs ;
- you clear Schengen immigration at CDG and after immigration you go to gate. You do not have any immigration control at CDG (departure) or MAD (arrival).
Your connection is protected (if the different legs are n the same ticket).
