ATC controls approach spacing based on aircraft weight and traffic to mitigate wake turbulence. It is possible for the aircraft following to "creep up" on the aircraft ahead depending on approach speeds and of course the weather can do all sorts of crazy things as well. If wake turbulence is encountered, the correct procedure is indeed to do a missed as Dorian said.
