To those who applied for the 50,000 points for $1000 spend within 3 months offer (bonus 4986), my friend who applied was told that the issue with the bonus code is that it is expired, not that it is an issue of targeting.
Furthermore, I had referred this friend for a 50,000 points offer for $3000 spend via the amex website, but she chose to go with the 50,000 $1000 spend offer since she didn't want to be subject to a $3000 spend when it seemed to her that the $1000 was slightly a better deal (she'd get the points sooner, or so she thought). Despite her having a documented e-mail stating that she was eligible for a 50,000 point offer AND her willingness to change out the expired bonus code from the $1000 spend offer, the Amex CSR on the phone insisted that nothing could be done and instructed her to immediately cancel her Platinum card and re-apply via my e-mail invitation. I'm a long-time Amex customer and personally, find it very disappointing that Amex has become so inflexible with bonus codes as to not permit switching to a code that one IS targeted for. It seems like a pretty good way to turn off potential new customers.
