I always have my passport book with me when I travel. You never know when you might need to be rerouted via Canada!

IME, if a given PNR includes ANY segments for which a passport swipe would be required, then the ticket agents could ask to see the passport prior to the issuance of ANY boarding passes on that PNR, even domestic segments on different departure days.

So....keep your passport with you. I keep my travel folio/wallet in my travel briefcase at all times so that I never leave behind my important items. This wallet also includes cards that I seldom need in everyday life but might need while traveling, such as my SPG Gold card, Hertz Gold card, HH Gold card, NEXUS card, a spare credit card, and various other items.

Don't most of us have this kind of "grab and go" setup with our travel briefcases? I didn't think I was that unique in this regard.
Bolding mine: ^ Exactly the reason I do as well (and it has saved my bacon royally during IRROPS on more than one occasion)
