I have to admit that I found the whole activation process very straight forward - took no more than 2 minutes. Waltzed into BNZ branch, filled out the form while they photocopied my drivers licence and credit card. All done.
Of course, if you don't have access to a BNZ branch, it sounds like it is a much more annoying process.
