I just called today about the reengagement challenge (had 72k miles that expired when I was in college and could not afford to travel.) I was told there is a $30 non-refundable fee to participate in the challenge... I figure $30 isn't bad for 72k miles so I paid it, but just wanted to give everyone a heads-up about that. The PDF AA sent me with all the rules mentioned this fee as well.
