When there is a need to contact passengers, an airline will assemble the relative names and telephone numbers and allocate staff to call. That is it, if there is no number or no answering machine, the airline has completed it's task of making contact.

It is the responsibility of the passenger to check departure times etc, has been since day one of flying, at one stage it was mandatory.

I don't see you have much to stand on, if you don't like the return flight, you could organise another, personally I would fly via DXB. From a FF point of view, this flight would be perfect, but I see your point, another 7 hours of flying, don't let it spoil your holiday, roll with it
