Overnight (domestic) connection on int'l itin; passport requirements?

Title pretty much sums it up. Do I need to actually have my passport present to claim the BP for a domestic flight when I have an overnight domestic connection to an int'l flight the following day?

I ask because the reservation, from AAA-BBB-CCC is serving a dual purpose: the return portion of a wholly domestic (BBB-AAA) trip and the outbound of an int'l (BBB-CCC) trip. Therefore, I typically wouldn't bring my passport on the domestic (BBB-AAA-BBB) trip because I'll be able to go home and get it before the int'l leg. However I'm curious if they'll require I present it before any travel commences.
