If you take a train to save money be advised that flying from MAD to FRA on a LCC will be a LOT cheaper. If you take a train because you expect that to be romantic and scenic I expect you to be disappointed.

I would also use the BA Award Saver for your AA domestic. I hear that is where they provide the most value.
