Yeah I realized that just after posting. It seems like there's no benefit of booking roundtrip as costs the same as two one way tickets (where I can be more flexible).

There are benefits of a RT award vs. a 1-way award. Some of the benefits you get with the RT can include a stop-over, open jaws or double open jaws. I am a bit hazy on what the latest rules state but I am sure others can quickly chime in.
I think what
mahasamatman was saying (and if so I agree) is that booking a 1-way award and 1-way revenue ticket can be very expensive as most revenue tickets (but of course not all) are geared towards round trips and are cheaper than 2 1-way tickets. Therefore you should probably go all award or all revenue (with miles for upgrade) but not 1/2 revenue and 1/2 award.
