Show up at the airport up to 3 hours prior to the desired new flight time. Go to the CO counter in Terminal A (where the non-stop ExpressJet EWR-BNA flight will be leaving from) and explain to the agent that you are ticketed to BNA and want to fly standby on the non-stop earlier flight.
Yes, there will be a charge for non-elites but otherwise there should be no problems getting you on the new flight, assuming space is available.
The US Air options will not be valid for standby travel.
I tried this today in IAH and failed miserably. Apparently a IAH-ORD-MKE itin is not eligible for standby because they would have to re-fare the ticket over the connection? At least, that's the answer I got from the fifth agent I talked to, the first one who didn't just tell me to go deal with the other airline in a different terminal. What gives, United?
