They should. Whoever flew only 29999 club miles have no one but themselves to blame for. If they did not ask CX to consider giving them an extension to get ONE extra club mile, they shouldn't be automatically granted SL. It is their responsibility not CX's to meet the min requirement. Even if they ask, CX does not have to grant the extension at all and I would personally prefer they don't unless it is under a very unusual circumstances. In some ways, those people have not earned their status, just like the AMEX holders who haven't earned theirs.
