Strange arrival route into Heathrow last night

Hi all

I came in from Boston last night and the flight took a rather strange route when we were approaching Heathrow that I have never seen before.

After a couple of obligatory turns around the Ockham hold, instead of being routed towards the city of London to make a left turn to land towards the west, (as would be normal), we actually headed north.

This took us almost directly overhead Heathrow itself (just slightly to the east in fact) at I guess about 8,000 feet. We then turned right when we got to north London, to join what I presume would be the normal track for aircraft arriving from Scotland.

If I haven't explained this very well, apologies, but in 20 years of flying, this has never happeend before. Can anyone shed any light on it?

Just curious that's all.
