Hard case doesn't seem taller than carry-on (a little less than 7") but obviously longer.
I would prefer the hard case for other reasons, but will it be an issue?

Large hard shell case will fit 75 overhead but when in hard case they're somewhat more likely to pink tag than when in bag.
