Did you call AA prior to going to the airport? Like the EXP line to try SDC?
Did the kiosk confirm a seat on the 6am flight and give you a confirmed BP or just a standby BP? If the kiosk gave you a confirmed BP, did it not ask you if you wished to be placed on the upgrade standby list?
