Looked like the trail was in a valley whereas the cable car looked out over the mountain at the airport runway, for example.
Didn't see anyone on the trail during my cable car ride but could see the appeal to hikers.
The view from the trail is quite similar to the cable car, except you can take more time to look around since you'll be walking at your own pace.
The start and end of the trail diverge from the cable car path but I'd say for at least half the trail you're walking directly under the cable cars. In certain spots you're close enough to wave at the people going by in the cable cars.
When we hiked it, it was a Monday afternoon and we ran into maybe 10 or so people across the entire trail. It seems to get much busier on the weekends though - we took the cable car up on the previous Saturday and saw tons of people hiking it (which is what gave us the crazy idea to hike up ourselves!)
