Actually, AA's policy is to accommodate you on another flight even if the connecting flight is on a different PNR. In fact, I believe their policy is to do so when connecting from any One World itinerary. Let me see if I can find that reference...
Actually, I take back what I said. I do recall reading somewhere about protection on OneWorld flights.
