I know they've been changing the flight information section at AA.com, but is it supposed to include this information? Otherwise, you can subscribe to ExpertFlyer and the expanded flight status will show codes of where the inbound aircraft is coming from.
You can now track the inbound flight on aa.com. A week ago, if you were to ask for this information, you would have been told that you couldn't have it because of "security concerns".

AA isn't really responsible for making sure you are compensated or accommodated for the next one, since you did miss the outbound on a completely independent itinerary. It could also result in the whole ticket being canceled.
IME AA protects you on misconnects, even if the itineraries are independent, as long as they are on AA metal.
