OK,this is just my speculation based on unconfirmed facts
As almost all EXPs know, ticket is usually "re-issued" after eVIP clears.
Just changing in fare class(such as from Q to C) isn't a "re-issue" of the ticket.
When ticket is re-issued, we get new ticket(with different ticket #) by email.
But a Record Locator(6 charactors) is same before/after re-issue of ticket.
Why AA re-issue ticket after eVIP clears?
unconfirmed fact#1: Re-issue of a ticket is just a kick-off to pull eVIP from our A/C
automatically.
Actually without re-issue of a ticket will not make any negative impacts on the rest of itinerary.
unconfirmed fact#2:There are 2 cases that re-issue of ticket doesn't happen
automatically after eVIP clears.
In these case, AA needs to pull eVIP
manually.
As OP's eVIP cleared on the day of the flight, AA needed to pull eVIP manually.
I am sure AA actually did manually but for some reason it failed

That is a reason why OP got lucky I guess.
Please experts correct me if I am wrong. I am still learning about eVIP.
