Thanks - very helpful. And I take it there is nothing I can do about this?

Does this also work the other way round? There is a decent chance the EAU will clear on the return before the UDU on the outbound given the respective loads on the flights. Would that mean I lose the chance to UDU, or is the glitch only when UA clears ahead of CO

After your outbound leg - go in your record on CO.com - locate your itinerary and add your OP number - it should now take over your account - When you check in online 24 hrs. before flight check to see if you are on the upgrade list - IF NOT then call CO Reservations and get them to do it manually - if they balk which they may - do it at the airport at check in. You should have a good shot as Plat on a W fare.
