When you credit your DL flights to AS MP, DL is giving money to AS. In this case, AS is collecting revenue without any additional hiring, no new planes, no ground crews, customer service, catering, fuel, etc. It's not quite as bad for AS as you might think.

Side note: am I the only one who thinks it silly that if I've already qualifed for Gold with 50k+ AS/partner miles, that AS would re-set the thermometer such that I would only have to fly 25k in AS miles to get 75k? It's almost like they want me to requalify for Gold before getting to 75k.
I'm not quite sure what you mean here. AS doesn't re-set any qualification thresholds at any point in the year. There's no way to qualify for 75K without first qualifying for Gold, even if you were already Gold via some other mechanism.
