In this economy there are an awful lot of people who are having trouble keeping their platinum status. I barely managed it by doing expensive, time consuming, annoying mileage runs -- it was not fun.

IMHO you are being overly harsh here. I think there is nothing wrong with asking. No where does the OP say that the pregnant woman expects or deserves special treatment. To me there its okay to ask but if the answer is no then you need to move on. To pursue if further would then signal entitlement to me.
