I feel your pain. I've had some doosies including an EWR-CLT flight with CO that got all the way to the NC state line before returning to EWR due to excessive fog at CLT and getting stranded in LGA overnight and turning a relatively simple DCA-CLT flight that I booked as DCA-LGA-CLT for the extra segment into DCA-LGA-BOS-CLT after LGA-CLT flights the next morning were full.
For future reference, unless you're looking for hotel or meal vouchers, calling is almost certainly going to be the quickest method (unless you have no status at all and are calling during a fairly large weather event such as an airport getting shut down, in which case there isn't a good solution), particularly if you've given a look online to see what routes are available and what you want to get booked on. I know it doesn't help know, just giving some advice when a flight gets cancelled in the future.
