I believe most of this hotel's business comes from conference-goers attending events either at the nearby convention center or the hotel itself.

The e-Standby upgrade also offers the presidential suite for an additional $159/night!
The prices have been sub-$100 the past two years around this time. I think last year I stayed a night in mid-December for $90 plus tax. Keep in mind the lounge usually closes this time of year, too, so you could get the full buffet at Lael's.

Keep in mind that there are two bowl games in San Diego. The Poinsettia Bowl is 12/21 and the Holiday Bowl is 12/28. The Grand Hyatt is usually packed with fans and at least one team from each game stays there. Last year, both teams from one of the bowls stayed there. The place was a mad house.
