As a *G member you are supposed to get this tag on each and every flight. I only have limited recent experience w/ US, but I flew LGA-CLT-DTW some time back in July & I as well as my companion (no status!) both got priority labels. Therefore I assume that the agent was just...well...let's say clueless
They are clueless sometimes. I once had an agent in PBI ask me if priority really made a difference, after much insisting from me that she add a tag, since she clearly was not going to put one on. I cheerfully chimed "yes it does!" Of course there are many agents in EWR at CO who don't even think to put a priority tag on for a plat.
