Without the exemption, it would have most likely fallen into the "benefits in kind" category. The question would be, would you have received those miles if the company hadn't sent you on a trip? Academic, anyway.
Our company used to give us a turkey each Christmas and we then found we had been taxed on the value of it in the next year's tax code. Bah HMRC humbug.
