Any memorable eateries outside the gates?
We really liked Siam Indigo in Phuket Town - nice art on the walls of a restored mansion, great menu and service and the whole thing seemed like miles away from the touristy hell of Patong. But closest options would be Patong or Karon (the latter perhaps less of a mad-house than the former), or Kata Beach (this costs slightly more in a taxi 200-300 one way). In Patong seafood restaurants across from Royal Paradise hotel/mall seemed like a good value with super fresh lobster and different kinds of fish (I'd recommend Coconut). In Kata, Kampong-Kata Hill Restaurant had great food and ambiance and was pretty full too. However, Patong is slightly better value of everything than Kata. Make sure to get out enough cash out of ATM, as Thai banks levy 150Baht surcharge every time you make a withdrawal.
