I'm doing LHR-PEK-SYD next week on CA938 / CA175 - the latter flight has a stop at PVG for about 90 minutes. How does this work exactly, in terms of what happens during the stop? I assume on the return trip SYD-PEK-LHR I can buy duty free at PEK and carry it to LHR without encountering any problems.

Be careful, Australia restricts the import or duty free liquids no bought at the last stopover and not checked in the hold. The easiest solution is to buy your duty free on arrival when you get to Australia, the prices may not be so good but it will be a lot cheaper than having it confiscated! Not sure whether I am allowed to post a link here... if not perhaps the moderator can do it, but if you go to the site duty free on arrival you can search all airline catalogues and prices on there.
