Frankly I really can't see what was behind BA's decision to give op-ups the lounge entitlement of the new cabin. It was an innovation that came in with LHR T5 - not sure how widespread it is. Seems a nonsense to me - unless they're claiming the GC lounge is full so they have to bump some people up to the CCR. Same goes for other privileges. The only reason for an op-up is to manage seats on the plane.
I suppose it gives the op-upee the full premium travel experience. If it is their first time it may make enough of an impression for them to pay for it at some stage. BA claim to have sufficient lounge capacity to do it.
