"A U.S. passport is recommended, but other U.S. citizenship documents such as a certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate, a Naturalization Certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Citizenship are acceptable. .....
Driver's permits, voter registration cards, affidavits and similar documents
are not sufficient to prove citizenship for readmission into the United States."
Most people do cross with only a drivers license.... some of the same people can be retained by INS for insufficient proof of citizenship... the thing is INS lets it slide many times.
Just a friendly tip so no FTers get stuck at the border and miss their flights home.
