Big Deal ! When you look at the fares on the way back, they have climbed to $ 435 from as low as under $ 300, with the end result (including taxes) being in the low $ 700's, exactly where they have been all these off season weeks except for high travel periods and specific days / flights.

What am I missing ? It seems even dumber than Bait and Switch...

I have run into the same issue a couple of times trying to book some deep discount tickets under a fare sale. Each time I would click on the discounted destination, the posted fares were 3-4 times higher, never even in the ballpark of what was shown. Reading the T&C carefully didn't help. Makes me wonder if it is bait and switch as well
