However, it appears that AF sometimes favor infrequent pax to attract them in the future. That would mean that having Plat status with no flights (as the OP) is better than Plat who already fly extensively and cannot afford the higher class. No incentive to opup those cheap guys as they will not fly more on AF. But the OP is a potential future customer.
All that is assuming that there is rationality beyond the friends/familiy/staff upgrades.
