In the past I've checked routings if I know that there is a discount fare between a and b, and cannot get the computer to price at the lowest available. It could be that the obvious routing (ie. airline hubs, Delta via ATL, UA via ORD) are not allowed for the fare. It's a way to check through other cities and build a connection for the best fare.
