The "uproar" wasn't caused by the suggestion that English was the official language. It was caused by the attitude, conveyed very strongly in your post, that if you can't speak English when visiting the US you shouldn't expect any help, consideration or assistance and you should just "live with it".
My point was meant to suggest that you get off your high horse and understand that we all have language limitations....even when think we speak the same language.
