Absolutely agree with this. I think the hotel management and staff has shown itself to be less than indifferent and uncaring.
And if recommended action fails, I'd even take the time to write Chris Elliott, perhaps the local newspaper and organizations concerned with violence against women or local women's business group (comments here and given at the hotel demonstrate why these are still necessary).
The wording "limited free parking" or the like would be much more appropriate for this hotel to use; leading customers to believe there is "free parking" is meaningless and basically advertising lies in this situation.

If the hotel advertises on its website free parking, then I would be tempted a) to give the hotel a chance to acknowledge the fact that it put you in an unsafe situation (I wonder what their insurer would think of their actions), b) escalate if needed to the Diamond Desk, c) if no responses to these are to your satisfaction then initiate a chargeback on your credit card for false advertising and breach of contract.
That WILL get their attention.
