Application of US International Transportation Tax to frequent flyer award tickets has been looked at very carefully as 'non-revenue' tickets including frequent flyer awards are exempted from this tax. However this is where no amount is paid for air transportation. As additional fees are paid on award tickets and as a fuel surcharge is applied then the exemption is negated and BA is required to collect US International Transportation tax on qualifying journeys, ie one commencing or terminating in the USA.

Just a friendly piece of advice: Make sure you get something in writing from a superior, or at least the legal team at BA, that you notified them of this "glitch".

When this does go to court, the first thing BA's lawyers are going to claim is that the company was unaware of this error. At which point these posts will be brought forth as evidence. The lawyers will claim you never notified a higher up, and then you'll get fired for not doing your job. You'll need something to protect yourself - it's hard to find a job in today's market
